Ellenborough Park has a rich history. In the late 15th century Southam was a freehold estate owned by Thomas Goodman who is credited with building the house; his crest and initials were said in 1836 to appear on the hall doorway. In the early 16th century the estate was bought by a Sir John Huddleston who is traditionally said to have finished the house. In 1831 the estate was sold to Edward Law, Earl of Ellenborough. He undertook major alterations and additions to the house, the house became known as Southam Delabere in 1865. After Ellenborough's death at Southam in 1871 the house was let to a series of tenants and was occupied from c.1906 to the Second World War by Mrs C M Ratcliff and her daughter. The house was sold in 1947 and became a private school for girls, The Oriel School. It was sold again in 1972 and has been a hotel since 1973.
